Cindy Brown Wedding Photogapher Bio PortraitMeet Cindy Brown

Cindy Brown has worked in, studied in, and taught in the field of photojournalism for more than 25 years. Her work, her education and her teaching have revolved around the concept of story telling. She uses skills honed as a photojournalist to capture the special moments of your wedding. Cindy focuses on the real and spontaneous—taking a few posed photos—but for the most part blending in with the crowd. A bride once wrote Cindy an e-mail saying, “Her presence at the wedding was so unobtrusive, that several people even asked where our photographer was hiding!” This is one of Cindy’s favorite testimonials.

"I love to photograph weddings," says Cindy. "They are a photojournalist’s dream—lots of emotions all rolled up into one joyful, action-packed day. Short of the Super Bowl, what could be better?"

In addition to shooting weddings, Cindy shoots photojournalistic portraits, bar/bat mitzvahs, corporate events, and sporting events. She also works on personal documentary projects, walks her dogs, pets her cats, cooks great veggie quiche, and studies theology.

The Early Years

Born and raised in Atlanta, Cindy’s passion for photography became apparent at an early age when she was encouraged to shoot Polaroid photos while vacationing with her family. Soon thereafter, a high school art teacher convinced Cindy to take a photography course where she built a pinhole camera and was exposed to the magic of the black-and-white darkroom.

The Middle Years

Cindy discovered the documentary power of photojournalism soon after graduating from high school while she was working on an A.A. in Photography at the Art Institute of Atlanta. After graduating with honors, Cindy worked for a small paper in South Georgia, but soon decided to return to school to complete a B.S. at Florida State University. Upon graduation from FSU, she became a staff photojournalist for the Pensacola News-Journal. She soon moved on to become a staff photojournalist at one of the biggest and best papers in the state of Florida, the St. Petersburg Times.

Cindy has an M.A. in Journalism and a Ph.D. in Mass Communication from Indiana University. Between working on her M.A. and Ph.D., Cindy was a picture editor for the Indianapolis Star. She has also taught photojournalism, ethics and visual communication at St.-Mary-of-the-Woods College, at Florida Southern and most recently at the University of Southern Mississippi. During her seven-year tenure teaching photojournalism at USM, Cindy worked on several documentary projects, including a long-term project documenting religious diversity in Mississippi.

Cindy is currently working on a Master of Divinity at Emory University in Atlanta.

Photography Achievements

Through the years, Cindy has won awards from the Pictures of the Year International, the Associated Press, the Southern Short Course, the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar and the Women in Photojournalism Conference.
