I love people.
I love photography.
I love photographing people in love.
Wedding photography is sometimes thought of as the bottom rung for photographers. But I think quite the reverse. A wedding is one of those rare times when the world stops. For a brief day, we allow ourselves to focus on just one thing. A wedding is a celebration of life. To document the celebration, I must be constantly vigilant to capture every nuance. After eight hours It's all over without ever the chance for a redo.
I use a blend of four kinds of photography: 1) Photojournalism, is more than a series of random snapshots. Finding the picture that tells the story comes from anticipation, patience, and perseverance. 2) Fine art photography, is work that provokes an aesthetic emotion. 3) Fashion photography, stretches our imagination to seek the unusual in body and apparel. 4) Classical portraiture, the kind of image that will be passed down through the generations, is at the core of photographic history.
I've been making photographs since as long I can remember. My career began working at my father's studio before I was a teenager. I assisted on wedding sessions (using a 4x5 speedgraphic) and shot I first solo wedding when I was just sixteen.
After earning a degree in art, I honed his skills as a photojournalist, working for newspapers and magazines. My craft continued to evolve while I was a river guide with landscape and fine art imagery of the west.
My passion is to design real-life photographs that transcend the ordinary snapshot to become a work of art. The picture must tell a true story. I want my images to have a sense of movement and an insight into the lives of the people I photograph. Whether I'm making a portrait for a judge or documenting a dance at a wedding, I look for the kind of subtle body language belongs to that person alone.
I've learned when to provide direction and when to become as invisible as possible. One of my greatest challenges as a people photographer, is to transition between photojournalist and confidant. Too much direction, can spoil spontaneity.
