Rangefinder - A camera with this feature actually calculates the distance between it and the subject, notifying the user when the subject is in focus.

Raw Data - Uncompressed data that comes from the CCD.

Read-out Register - Each row of photosites on an image sensor sends out signals. This mechanism reads these signals and sends them to the camera’s analog-digital converter.

Rectilinear - This type of lens has in it the corrective elements that work against barrel distortion.

Recycling - This is the wait time the camera takes to get ready to take another shot.

Red-Eye - Caused by the flash. The bright light hits the eyes and when it is reflected back to the lens it causes this problem which causes the eyes of the subject to appear bright red.

Red-Eye Reduction - This flash mode actually sets of a short flash that causes the irises in the subjects eyes to close thereby eliminating the red-eye in the final image.

Refraction - This technique utilizes transparent substances to slow and bend light.

Refresh Rate - The rate at which the image is redrawn on the LCD viewfinder. The higher this rate the smoother the picture.

Registration - A full color photograph is achieved by positioning the primary color channels over each other.

Re-Sampling - When changing the size of the document up or down the pixels either get generated or reduced respectively.

Resolution - Number of pixels that can be displayed in a given area. Where PPI is pixels per inch and DPI is dots per inch.

RGB - The primary colors which are red, green, and blue. Different combinations of these three colors can in fact produce all other colors.

Rubber Stamp - This digital editing technique enables the user copy pixels from one part of a digital image to another.
